Background

My name is Alisha Sinclair. I am a student at Grand View University. Currently I'm enrolled in a literacy course where I am working with an elementary student who struggles with reading. Through this literacy course I am learning different reading strategies that I can apply to help the growth of my struggling reader. I am working with a struggling reader in a 5th grade classroom at a school in the Des Moines School District.
This school offers a learning environment where responsibility and respect are just as important as any subject being taught. The emphasis that the school has on order and discipline provides a great environment for the children to concentrate on their studies. This is the only school in the Des Moines district to offer the Core Knowledge Sequence. Any child living in Des Moines may apply to attend Phillips Traditional School.
At this particular school they:
 •Offer the Core knowledge Sequence.
 •Teach basic skills.
 •Focus on home-school relations.
•Emphasize discipline, responsible citizenship, and respect.
 •Requires homework from all students.
•Select staff who value traditional education.
The struggling reader I will be working with is a 10 year old girl. She was selected for me by my CT. The information I have collected from him tells me that this young lady has problems with reading comprehension and spelling. I am anxious to start working with her and applying my knowledge to hopefully help her become a better reader
